This is what is completely wrong in the cannabis industry. Very sad to actually see this…. This is exactly why Cannabinoid Hyperemesis exists. What do you do when the industry normalizes this… Completely ruining the gene pool for ever. Can’t fix years of this
Why fem breeding narrows the cannabis gene pool
Breeding two female plants (via forced hermaphroditism / “fem” methods) is not true outcrossing sexual breeding; it is a form of inbreeding or clonal-line propagation that progressively narrows genetic diversity.
What actual breeding requires
Sexual reproduction in dioecious plants (separate male and female individuals, as in many cannabis lines) normally involves:
- A male plant contributing pollen that carries a Y chromosome (or the equivalent sex-determining factors).
- A female plant receiving that pollen.
- The resulting seeds combining half the genome from each parent. This continually reshuffles alleles, maintains heterozygosity, and allows selection against deleterious recessives while preserving useful variation.
That process is what maintains a healthy, adaptable gene pool over generations.
What “fem breeding” actually does
Feminized seed production typically works by stressing or chemically treating a female plant (colloidal silver, STS, environmental stress, etc.) so it produces male flowers and pollen. That pollen is then used on another female (or the same plant). Because both parents are genetically female (XX), the pollen carries only X-bearing gametes. Nearly all offspring are female.
Genetically this is equivalent to:
- Crossing two closely related females, or
- Self-pollination / sib-mating within a female line.
It is not the introduction of new, independent male genomes. It is recycling the same maternal genetic background.
Why this degrades the gene pool
Repeated fem-only cycles produce the classic effects of inbreeding:
- Loss of heterozygosity. Heterozygous loci become homozygous. Any recessive deleterious alleles that were previously masked are now expressed. Over successive generations this appears as inbreeding depression: reduced vigor, lower yields, increased hermaphroditism, weaker stress tolerance, smaller plants, etc.
- Narrowed genetic base. Alleles present only in true males (or in unrelated male lines) are never introduced. Useful variation for disease resistance, cannabinoid/terpene diversity, environmental adaptation, and overall robustness is lost.
- Accumulation of fixed defects. Once a harmful allele becomes homozygous and fixed in a line, it is extremely difficult to remove without outcrossing to unrelated material (preferably involving males).
- Increased hermaphroditism risk. The very tendency to produce male flowers under stress is heritable. Selecting and propagating plants that readily herm under the treatments used to make fem pollen concentrates that trait. Later generations become more unstable.
In short, continuous fem-only production is closer to vegetative cloning with an occasional meiotic shuffle of the same limited gene set than it is to population-level breeding. It can produce uniform, female-heavy seed for commercial convenience, but it does so by sacrificing the genetic health that true male × female crosses maintain.
Responsible long-term breeding programs therefore retain true males, periodically outcross to unrelated lines, and use feminization selectively and sparingly rather than as the sole method.
Then they pass it to the next breeder who does exactly the same, over and over and over… Nah, you have awesome genetics my friend. Look at the comments in this video to actually see how gone the cannabis industry is. Never coming back without a new Gene pool.
This is exactly why I did my breeding program, someone had to save the actual cannabis gene pool.
